We fished our Bass Assassins tournament today out of Bayou LaCombe. We know the water was messed up in LaCombe, and the fish were not doing well so we ran to Bonfouca. When we got there we found schooling fish at the mouths of the bayous leading into Bonfouca. There was even a moment when the school was so big it was around the boat. Looked like a hundred bass went nuts around us. It only lasted 20 seconds. My son, and I both started with our white Chug Bugs. We both missed a lot of fish. They were hitting funny. Usally they would hit once, and if you didn't get him he would come back to crush it. Not today. If you didn't hook him he was not coming back. I manage to land 3 keepers. One of which was a real line burner. Gavin managed to land one keeper. We both were having fun, but still disgusted from all the fish we lost. We run to our second spot after the action died down. I pick up my Chug Bug again. Gavin digs in the rod locker, and pulls out his worm rod. He flips his watermelon red straight tail worm by the dock. Then I hear, daddy I got one. I watch as he flops in another keeper. I high five him, unhook it, and fix his worm. He flips it right back out there. Daddy! Another! Now he has his Little Tangler's limit. I reach in the rod box to drag out my worm rod. Can't let the boy show up his old man. LOL! I flip the same worm out there. Bump. I rare back, and flop him in. Now I have four. We go down the bank some more. As we get to the rocks we hit a frenzy. I catch two more on Chug Bug. Now I culled out that line burner, and I feel much better. We continue on down the bank switching between the bug, and the worm. We land a few more fish, and I was able to cull a few out, but only for a few oz. We jump to a new dock that I never fished before, but I liked how it stuck out into the main channel. I get a few bites on the bug, but only catch one little one. We both start to flip the dock. Be with the straight tail, and Gavin with a red shad colored 7.5 in Culprit worm. I catch two more fish, but only one helped. Once again only by oz. I kept looking at a lone log in the water to the side, so I ease on over there. I fling my worm to it. Bump. I swing, and miss. I throw back out there. Bump bump. I pull up to feel him swimming. I reel down, and slam. I see the fish as I drag him over the log. He makes a big ruckus, and we both know this is a nice fish. I drag him in, and land him. We both look like old Ike screaming on the deck. He was 3 lbs. 3 oz. Now I get to cull up a few pounds this time.

By now it was almost 11, and weigh in is for noon, so we head back to LaCombe. Gavin won the Little Tanglers. I got first, and big fish. It was a great day on the water, and a great weekend on the water for that matter. For so long now the fish have been schooling in open water, and I am not complaining. I was just nice that on both Lock 1, and Bonfouca we were able to catch some on the old up close and personal level. Were it was close, hard hook sets to drag them out of the cover. The kind where the fish in in the boat before he realizes there was a hook in what he just ate. That is some fun fishing. The bass are moving up on the banks more, and more right now. Fall is almost here! I can't wait! -CLB1979
