Moist Pants Kid & I made an after school / after work float Thursday afternoon. Hayes beat me in the water, and was already reeling in a red within eyesight when I arrived to the launch around 3:30. Weather was beautimus, water was brown but clear to 3 feet in most spots with its temp in the mid 70s. After the kid finished playing with his red, we headed to a go to of mine.
Caught a few right off the bat, but were getting three times as many short strikes than hook ups. We knew good numbers were around, but they were acting finicky. We started varying our lures & techniques and found different ways to get the yellow mouths to commit. We had to continue this process to keep the bite consistent, and it was.
Bayouyakker went off to explore some things on his own for a while, but I stayed in the same general area for the 3 hours we were out. We threw hard baits and soft plastics on & off the cork, and caught on all methods. When the kid & I rejoined toward the end, their bite got more aggressive and we started doubling up multiple casts in a row. It was a hoot, and a great way to end a weekday!!
I kept 16, tagged five of my biggest, caught a handful of babies, and released at least another 10 legals. Most were 14-17 inches and my toad of the day went over 23 inches. I'll be checking some other spots in the Lady this weekend in hopes of continuing the speckled easter egg fun. I'm definitely gonna join the armada that'll sure to be at the trestles. See ya out there brah!
Tight lines, dripping paddles, and creaking pedals to all
